Annapurna Circuit
It is easy to understand why this tea-house trek is a popular classic. It includes the world’s highest trekking pass, point blank Annapurna mountain views, and an animated postcard of magnificent changing scenery, together with Dahl Baht, croissants and famous apple pie on route.   The standard of food and lodgings is excellent whilst the trek itself is a challenging circumference of the Annapurna massif. Sharing the trail with mule trains, we walk for 21 days through an enormous variety of landscapes – jungle lowlands, rivers, waterfalls, natural hot springs, to Rhododendron forests, corn-fields, apple groves, and cool fir forests. Our itinerary allows time to soak up the wonderful variety of culture that this trek is also famous for– visiting intriguing maize-like villages, monasteries, temples and prayer wheels. Staying in lodges also gives us a first hand taste of the local cultures.  The trek provides exceptional views of the towering white-capped Annapurna range. And up so close you could almost reach out and leave a fingerprint in the thick snowcaps.

Day 3-21 Trek
An early morning rise is required for the 5-6 hour drive with plenty of breaks, to reach the starting point of the trek, Besisahar (820m). After a lunch break the Spirit team will organise the porters to carry the luggage and gear and then we commence our trek to our first destination of Bhule Bhule (840m).  Starting the next day crossing over the Ngadi Khola river via a massive suspension bridge, followed by a hot ascent to Bahundanda through terraced rice fields and then dropping steeply down a trail, we reach our next destination, Ghermu (1100m)  in 5-6 hours.  Today you will pass through fields of healthy marijuana plants, trek through the villages of Syanje, Jagat, Chamje and from a wide valley enter the narrow gorge with the river thundering through it before the long hot climb to Tal (1700m) where we spend the night.  A 3-4 hour trek and our next destination, Danagyu (2300m) is reached. The following day we take the higher route passing through apple orchards and pine forests before reaching the large village of Chame (2670m) where we lodge away from the main part of the town in a wonderful riverside location next to the hot springs. A 5 hour trek today takes us to an impressive section of the trail which is blasted out of solid rock and as we approach the Paungda Danda bridge a magnificent cliff of granite looms up ahead like gigantic wave.  After climbing through a peaceful forest we then emerge into the Manang valley which is another world before reaching Pisang (3300m) our stop for the evening.  The following day we trek through Upper Pisang and make a hard climb of 350m to reach the small settlement of Ghyaru (3670m). Despite the lodges being very basic we chose to spend the night here as the mountain views are absolutely tremendous, Annapurna II (7937m), Lamjung Himal (6931m), Annapurna III (7555m) and Gangapurna (7455m) can be seen in their full glory.  Next we trek to Braga (3450m) and base ourselves here for the next two days allowing us to acclimatise. Spending our first afternoon in Manang (3540m), we enjoy the luxuries of this large town and also visit the Himalayan Rescue Association health post. Our acclimatisation day trip takes us to the glacial lake which sits at the foot of the huge icefall that drops from the northern slopes of Gangapurna.  Trekking at a slower pace now as the air is thinner we take 4-5 hours to reach our next destination of Letdar (4200m). The following day we only trek for 2-3 hours and gain 250m to reach Thorung Phedi (4450m). We spend the rest of the day resting up in preparation for our big day tomorrow, a 6-8 hour, 1040m ascent and a 1620m descent to reach Muktinath (3800m). We will leave at first light and you will be delighted by the time you reach a teashop at 5115m, you then make your way trhough stony monnscape before reaching the prayer flags which mark the top of the pass, Thorung La (5416m). From here, first passing a large glacier, a long descent starts and the views of the mountains lining the Kali Gandaki valley, particularly Dhaulagiri (8167m) are superb.  The sight of Muktinath creates a feeling of achievement!

The following day leaving this walled temple complex where both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims have been coming to for centuries, we trek to Kagbeni (2800m), a fascinating medieval rabbit warren of mud-brick houses which stands in a green oasis.  The following day a 4 hour hike towards Jomson, passing through Jharkot enables us to reach the most efficiently run village with excellent lodges of Marpha (2670m). The main street of Marpha is paved with spotless flagstones, dazzlingly white houses, each with piles of wood neatly stacked on its roof.  A 3-4 hour trek brings us to Kalopani (2530m) which allows us a spectacular view of Annapurna 1 (8091m) and an even better view can be had  by climbing up behind the school.  A long day of trekking takes us to the mellow village of Tatopani (1190m), (meaning “hot water” in Nepali). A relaxing evening can be spent before rising the next day to explore the surrounds and soak in the natural hot springs below the village – where a view of Nilgiri (7060m) can be gazed upon from the hot tub.   Another long day of trekking but rewarded with beautiful scenery and gorgeous villages as you walk through rhododendron and magnolia forests to reach Ghorepani (2750m) our next destination.  An early morning rise is necessary to watch the sunrise across a spectacular Himalayan panorama from the summit of Poon Hill (3193m) which is just above Ghorepani. Dhaulagiri (8167m), Tukuche (6920m), Nilgiri (6940m), Annapurna South (7273m), Annapurna 1 (8091m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Tarke Kang (7193m) and “Fish Tail” – Machhapuchhre (6997m) can all be seen in their full glory.  Breakfast at Ghorepani and then a 3-4 hour descent to reach the peaceful location of Tikhedunga (1540m) where we spend the night.  A morning trek through Birethanti getting your last glimpse of Fish Tail and then crossing over the Modi Khola river to reach Nayapul.  From here you will be driven back to the comfort of your hotel in the delightful lakeside location of Pokhara and spend the afternoon drinking a well earned cappaccino by the lake.
